Day Trips from London
Oxford
Welcome to Oxford, the renowned university city steeped in history. As you wander through its charming cobbled streets, you'll encounter iconic colleges that boast unique tales and breathtaking architecture. For an essential experience, indulge in a leisurely punt along the River Cherwell, passing by idyllic college gardens and picturesque views. Don't miss out on the Ashmolean Museum, the first of its kind at a university, housing an impressive collection of art and antiquities. The Bodleian Library, one of Europe's oldest, also houses over 12 million fascinating items waiting to be discovered. At the end of the day, grab a pint in a pub full of students. Who knows, you might meet the next genius!
Cambridge
Just a short journey from Oxford is Cambridge, a captivating city defined by its stunning university buildings and charming bridges. Make sure to visit King's College Chapel with its stunning fan-vaulted ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows. Take a stroll through the bustling market square where you can find delicious street food and local goods to enjoy. Don't forget to explore the scenic backs along the river where you can hire a punt for a unique perspective of the colleges. And be sure to stop by the Fitzwilliam Museum which houses an extensive collection of art and antiquities - a location often visited by my Parisian colleague, Jeanne Bûcher.
Windsor
Nestled in the county of Berkshire lies Windsor, home to the prestigious Windsor Castle where the royal family resides, which you can also visit. Delve into the regal past as you explore the State Apartments, St. George's Chapel, and the sprawling castle grounds. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll through the charming town center filled with quaint shops, cozy cafes, and traditional pubs. For breathtaking views of the castle, embark on a serene walk along the Long Walk, a tree-lined path stretching from Windsor to Snow Hill perfect for a picnic or appreciating the stunning surroundings.
Bath
Just a short journey away is Bath (as seen on the picture above), renowned for its Roman Baths that offer a glimpse into Britain's rich history with the Roman Empire. The city is also known for its exquisite Georgian architecture, with iconic landmarks like the Royal Crescent and the Circus showcasing its opulent past. For a unique experience, indulge in a dip at Thermae Bath Spa where you can relax in a rooftop pool boasting stunning city views. And don't forget to visit Pulteney Bridge, one of Bath's most picturesque spots adorned with charming shops and offering serene views of the River Avon. A visit to these two cities will surely leave you captivated by their beauty and history.
Salisbury
Salisbury, a charming cathedral city, is distinguished by its stunning Gothic cathedral, renowned for its magnificent architecture and the tallest spire in all of England. The cathedral's exquisite cloisters and Chapter House, home to the original Magna Carta, are essential stops on any visitor's itinerary. Venture to Old Sarum, an ancient hilltop site where you can wander through the ruins of an Iron Age fort, a Roman settlement, and a medieval castle while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Don't miss St. Thomas's Church with its impressive stained glass and medieval design. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the picturesque countryside surrounding Salisbury, including nearby New Forest National Park and scenic paths along the River Avon.
These enchanting towns and cities offer a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of London, each brimming with unique attractions and experiences.
